Many people give back with money, I choose service. Through yoga and meditation, I found my way to the Urban Zen practice. After continuous study I decided to deepen my understanding of self healing and contemplative care by completing my certification in Urban Zen Integrative Therapy. Upon completion I became an active volunteer, working with cardiac, oncology and palliative care patients. It gives me great pleasure and soul satisfaction to bring relief to patients, their families, staff at UCLA Hospital and various other medical/rehab facilities.
Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program has partnered with UCLA's long tradition of integrating holistic healthcare with traditional medicine and its mission of treating the patient as a whole for optimal healing. During this critical time Reiki can significantly enhance and support the physical and emotional well-being of the patient, family and caregivers.
Urban Zen is another step toward doing everything possible to make patients of UCLA Health more comfortable. UZITs (Urban Zen Integrative Therapists), alleviate patient suffering, promote health, and deliver acts of kindness by offering Yoga therapy/mindful movements, Reiki, essential oil therapy, nutrition, and contemplative care/mindful awareness exercises. Such techniques have proven very effective in reducing the need for heavy doses of pain medication for oncology patients.
Reducing a patients' pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, constipation, stress, and sadness is likely to decrease the amount of time the patient is in the hospital and decrease the amount of medication needed, which automatically means fewer side effects.

Mindful Movements - breath awareness, combined with gentle restorative movements and guided meditation
Reiki - a Japanese vibrational energy therapy facilitated by light touch, on or slightly off the body, that balances the human biofield
Essential Oils - volatile liquids distilled from plant materials used to rejuvenate the mind and body
Contemplative Care - the cultivation of mindful awareness, emotional balance, equanimity and compassion around issues of illness. UZITs have been trained to cultivate deepened qualities of attention, ethics, insight, compassion, and resilience, as well as the implementation of meditation and reflective practice, to effectively accompany sick people and their families through the experience of illness.
The mindful movements employed in a session are gentle movements on the massage table, floor, chair or if immobilized, in-bed movements to foster improved circulation, decrease swelling, stretch tight muscles, improve digestion, respiration, and relaxation. Breath awareness techniques, meditations, and aromatherapy will help you to reduce pain, invite relaxation and recovery. Together we start to unpack and release that energy so that your energy is flowing through you, working with you, and not against you.
